Glaus&Gut Casting is Switzerland’s leading casting agency for film and series work. At the heart of their daily work is the Kartei – a web application for casting roles, managing projects, and sharing proposals with directors and producers. My job was to rebuild this ageing application from the ground up.
The challenge
The existing Kartei had run reliably for years, but it was technically dated and increasingly painful to use day-to-day.
Improvements were costly to make, certain workflows took longer than they should. At the same time, the rebuild needed to keep all the functionality the system had grown into – the casting directors depend on it daily.
Particularly interesting: directors and producers would get direct access to projects for the first time – with clearly scoped permissions, and without exposing any sensitive contact data.
The solution
The result is a fully redeveloped application – one that preserves the existing feature set and extends it where day-to-day work calls for it:
Actor and project management: Profiles, media, and roles are organised in a clean structure, proposals move easily between roles, and the PDF export has been refreshed to look more contemporary.
Working with externals: Directors and producers now work directly in the application. A traffic-light system with status indicators and short notes replaces the old email back-and-forth.
Applications and search: The application form is finally fully responsive, and search covers every field and supports complex operators.
The existing data was migrated in stages – so the office kept working through the changeover without interruption.
Results and outcome
The new Kartei went live in February 2026, replacing the old system. Tasks that used to take several clicks and a bit of patience now happen in a single step. The biggest change has been in how the team works with directors and producers – instead of emailing PDFs back and forth, everyone works directly in the application.
Glaus&Gut Casting can get back to what the office does best – finding the right face for the right role. I stay involved and keep developing the application.
